Thanks to the willingness and enthusiasm of many schools, our participants have the opportunity to attend school and grasp a firsthand experience of the American school system.
- The participants sign an agreement that requires them to behave as a regular student, according to their abilities and their best understanding of the language. Although they will not receive credits since they are on an "auditing basis"; they must, and are expected to do homework, projects and exams, and to participate in all school activities.
- Good behavior and respect must be observed at all times.
- Scheduling and other important issues should be discussed with the host family. Upon registration, paperwork will be presented (health and school records).
- Schedules should be, if possible, around the host child’s schedule depending on availability and English proficiency level. Although some classes on their own should allow them independence and an opportunity to make friends on their own.
- The student should be taking academic classes that require homework; as well as elective classes, that they may not have the opportunity to experience in Guatemala.
- Extra curricular classes and/or team sports after school are encouraged, upon availability, preferences and legality on the level of competition.
- We encourage our students to participate and aid the teacher in the Spanish class, and they are prepared to give informal lectures about Guatemala.
- Grades or reports are not necessary, but would be appreciated.
Homeschooling
If the host family has chosen homeschooling for their family, our student will comply with these curricula. The classes and other decisions will be dealt with in the family and according to their own planning.
- Participants will do work at home and can participate in all fieldtrips and other activities scheduled for their own children.
- Participants bring extra money to cover additional outside home classes, trips or activities.
